Here is the study guide for the third quiz, which will be based on lectures from October 11 to October 18, and on The American War, Chapters 5-7. The PowerPoints are available as always.
Part I: Chronologies
There will be two chronology questions. Study these dates (listed here in no particular order): Chancellorsville, Vicksburg, Gettysburg, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Antietam, slavery abolished in D.C., 1st Confiscation Act, 2nd Confiscation Act, and the Emancipation Proclamation. You can use your lecture notes and The American War to help you out. This part of the quiz will not require you to memorize the actual dates, but instead it will ask you to put a series of events in chronological order (by start date, so the siege of Vicksburg began before Gettysburg, even though they ended at the same time). Of course, if you know the actual dates, it does help you answer the question!
Parts II and III: Multiple Choice and Fill-In-The-Blank
This section will consist of fill-in-the-blank and multiple choice questions based on the Gallagher and Waugh book and lecture.
Part IV: Short Essay
There will be one short essay question that requires a response of at least one long paragraph or two short paragraphs in prose (not bullet points). For this section, here are the two questions to study:
- How did Lincoln’s views on race and slavery change over time? Be specific in your answer.
- How did the prospect of European intervention in the war affect U.S. and Confederate efforts at international diplomacy?
