Instructor Info

My name is Dr. Kristen Epps and I am an assistant professor at the University of Central Arkansas. You’ve found your way to my course website for HIST4330: The Civil War and Reconstruction. This site serves as a repository of information for students in this course, including links to my syllabus and online readings, posts about “history in the news,” and any other history-related topics that strike my fancy.

To give you some background, I received my B.A. in Honors History from William Jewell College (Liberty, MO), my M.A. in American History from The College of William and Mary (Williamsburg, VA), and my Ph.D. in American History from the University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS). My research interests include race and society in antebellum America, focusing particularly on slavery, abolition, and Bleeding Kansas (though I still have a soft spot in my heart for colonial history). My book, Slavery on the Periphery: The Kansas-Missouri Border in the Antebellum and Civil War Eras, will be published in December 2016. I have taught undergraduate methods courses, the American history surveys, and upper-division courses such as HIST3353: African American History Before 1868, HIST4391: The Memory and Meaning of the Civil War, and courses at other universities titled “The Peoples of Kansas” and “Women and Reform.”  I’ve also taught graduate courses on research methods and various aspects of nineteenth-century America.

In addition to my teaching and research experience, I serve as the Digital Media Editor for the Journal of the Civil War Era. I was also blessed with the opportunity to work at the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture as an editorial assistant, and as a project archivist for the Territorial Kansas Online project and the Kansas Memory digitization projects, both created by the Kansas State Historical Society. I have also done some freelance writing.
